2020 was a year for the record books. Even with Covid hitting the world, rappers were still able to produce top tier albums. Even though I personally think that The Weeknd had the best album of 2020 his genre of music is not Rap. Today I’ll be listing my picks for the top three rap albums of 2020. My top three albums were The Goat by Polo G, Eternal Atake by Lil Uzi Vert, and My Turn by Lil Baby.
Polo G released his album The GOAT on May 15, 2020. It consists of 16 songs which amounts to 47 minutes of listening. This is Polo G’s second album and it highlights what he has been through during his rough life growing up in Chicago. The album’s name itself means the Greatest of All Time so he’s basically calling himself the best in the rap game. Most of the songs have a very fast tempo and a hard beat. He ends the album with a song called “Wishing for a Hero”, where he talks about the racial injustice that African-Americans have faced over the years.
My second album pick, Eternal Atake by Lil Uzi Vert was a highly anticipated album. Fans had been waiting on this for over two years. They had been teased by releases for a long time. So when it finally dropped in early March 2020, fans were very excited. Multiple times throughout this album, you hear Uzi talk about how he has been kidnapped by aliens and is in a new world. He puts part two of his award winning song “XO TOUR LIFE” on this album as well as many other great songs. My favorite song on the album is “Bust Me” which talks about how girls started acting differently when he became rich. “And when you get this type of money, You are never ugly.” He also dropped a deluxe which featured many of his already leaked songs. All in all, this lived up to the hype and was a very solid album.
The third album on my list is Lil Baby’s My Turn which was released on February 28, 2020. Lil Baby is known for dropping really good albums such as Harder than Hear, Street Gossip and Drip Harder. Lil Baby was the first artist in 2020 to go double-platinum for his album My Turn and then his deluxe album. My favorite song of the album is “Emotionally Scarred” which talks about his love life, “A love letter came through the mail, it said, “I miss you”, I ripped it up and flushed it with the tissue, trying to forget you.” The one with the most streams is “We Paid” featuring 42 Dugg which was on his deluxe. Even though this wasn’t his best album he has made, it was still above average.
My favorite album of 2020 was The Goat by Polo G. I just loved how it talked about all the experiences he has been through. I am also a big fan of rappers talking about how they got to where they are and the struggles they went through on the way to the top.
